Sushi Mahjong Game Review

Sushi Mahjong Game Background

Sushi Mahjong is a Mahjong Solitaire game themed after sushi restaurants. Match pairs of identical free mahjong stones to clear them from the stack. Clear away the stack as quickly as you can.

This game was developed by Zygomatic.

How to Play Sushi Mahjong

Select by left clicking with your mouse or tapping on the touchscreen with your fingers. On the welcome screen, select Play on the bottom center of the screen to open the level selection screen. Select the arrows on the bottom left corner to browse levels, then select Play to begin the selected level.

Select a free stone, then select an identical free stone to clear it from the stack.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Basic Rules

Your goal is to clear all the stones (tiles) before the timer expires. Remove tiles by selecting pairs of identical free tiles one after another. A free tile is one without a tile above it and without another tile in at least one horizontal side. The game helpfully highlights the free stones and grays out the non-free ones.

You only have a limited amount of time to clear each stack of stones. The amount of time provided varies with the level. In general, the higher the level, the move time you’re provided with. You will gain extra points for every second left on the timer upon finishing. However, you will fail the level if you run out of time.

The soy sauce stones, when paired, does not yield stones. It will, however, add extra seconds to the timer.

The game has 50 levels, which are unlocked sequentially. Your web browser automatically saves your level progress. You can replay any of the levels you’ve already beaten.

Assistance

You have two help options or power ups that can help you if you’re in a tight spot. You can find their buttons on the bottom right corner of the welcome screen. They cost points, though, so use them sparingly.

  • The shuffle button looks like a reset button. It costs 250 points to use rearranges the placement of every stone on the stack.
  • The hint button resembles a question mark and costs 100 points to use. It reveals the position of a valid pair of stones somewhere in the stack.

If you run out of valid pairs, the game automatically shuffles all the stones without any penalty.

Scoring

Each pair of stones you remove is worth 20 points. You receive an extra 3 points for every second left on the timer. Your final score, shown on the level selection screen, is cumulative. It consists of the sum of every level you’ve played so far. You can also view your current high scores for every level you’ve played so far. Your web browser automatically saves current best scores.

Replaying a level will change your final score for that level if you beat your previous high score. It will also add the difference between the previous and best scores to your final score.

When you finish a game or end in a game over, you have the option to save your final score to the leaderboard. Select submit score, then type in your username on the name space provided. You can view the leaderboard by selecting High Scores on the welcome screen.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

We recommend removing stones from the sides inward to open up more tiles as the game progresses. This will help you clear out more stones and prevent you from running out.

Watch out for minute differences in some of the stones. Some of them look similar at a glance but differ in key details. Look closely at each stone before pairing it off.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the soy sauce stones and the time bonus they provide.

Educational Aspects

This game hones a player’s pattern recognition, logical thinking, and searching skills.

Player Age Recommendations

This game is suitable for players school-aged and above. We recommend it for hungry fans of Mahjong Solitaire games who love sushi.
