Treasure of the Apes is an obstacle-dodging platform game inspired by the original Donkey Kong game from 1981. As an intrepid handyman, move up the platforms and dodge the barrels thrown down by the angry ape from the top of the screen. Reach the golden banana to win.

How to Play Treasure of the Apes

To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen with your fingers. Select the play button at the center of the welcome screen to begin.

On the desktop, press the arrow keys on your keyboard to move. Press the left and right arrows to move horizontally. To jump or climb up, press the up arrow. To climb down, press the down arrow.

On a touchscreen device, tap on the on-screen buttons on the bottom row as you would with the arrow keys.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Your goal is to collect the golden banana near the top of the screen. Reach the banana and the purple ape by moving up the platforms and going up ladders.

The purple ape will try to stop you by pushing down barrels. Dodge the barrels by jumping over them, climbing above them, or simply moving in an areas where they’re not falling.

Hit a barrel, a fireball, or a spike and you lose one of your 4 lives. These appear on the top left corner of the screen. Lose all your lives and you fail the level; upon failing, you can try again.

Each level has a limited number of hammers. Use these to gain the temporary ability to smash the barrels. You can also collect fruit for bonus points.

The game has 3 levels, which loop after you finish the third one. You can keep playing the levels for as long as you want or until you run out of lives.

In each level, you start with 5900 points and gradually lose them for every second of play time that elapses. Finish the level as quickly as you can. You also gain 500 points for eating fruit, 500 points for smashing a barrel, and 100 points for jumping over a barrel. Your score is cumulative. The points you’ve earned from one level are added to your total score.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

Each level has a specific strategy. In the first level, you only have to deal with the barrels tossed by the apes. Whether the barrels fall down a ladder or roll down the platform can vary, and it’s often better for you to figure out where it’s going before making your move. Try to move in the spaces between the barrels to avoid them entirely. Whenever you can, jump over barrels while moving in the opposite direction to maximize the chances of evading them.

The main challenge of the second level is the fireball at the center. Carefully plan your move from the first platform so you can hop across the moving platform without hitting the spikes. Once you’re just below the uppermost platform, it’s simply a matter of waiting for the fireball to move away before running toward the banana.

Evade the dripping fire with ease by timing your jumps immediately after the fire hits the platform. This gives you ample time to make the next jump. The real challenge begins with the top 2 platforms; evade the spinning spiked balls and the fireball. To collect the banana, stand in the middle of the center platform just below the top row, move up the ladder swiftly, then run toward it. While there is an apple on the opposite side of the level, it’s better to ignore it; the amount of points you lose from the time wasted getting it is more than what you stand to gain.

The game tests a player’s hand-eye coordination, response times, and on-the-spot strategic thinking skills. Players must be able to think on the fly and modify their choices based on both immediate and incoming dangers.
