Candy Crunch Game Review

Candy Crunch Game Background

Candy Crunch is a candy-themed match 3 game. Clear groups of 3 or more candies and other sweet foods to clear them from the grid. Clear as many rows as possible the target number of moves to earn as many points as you can. Earn and clear the required number of moves to finish each level.

This game was developed by Zygomatic.

How to Play Candy Crunch

To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen with your fingers. On the welcome screen, select Play on the bottom center left to open the level selection screen. On the level selection screen, select an unlocked level’s icon to begin.

Move a pair of pieces by selecting one piece, then selecting another. If one of the pieces forms a valid pair, they will stay in place. The row will be cleared.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Basic Rules

Your goal in each level is to make the number of target moves. You begin with a limited number of moves and must earn more by clearing wrapped candies. Clear pieces of candy or other food items forming groups of 3 or more identical candies in a row. A number on the wrapped candy piece indicates how many rows it takes to clear it. Rows provide 3 extra moves each and increase your multiplier by a value of 1.

In later levels, you encounter blocks of cheese. You cannot move cheese blocks, but they can be removed as part of a valid row of any piece.

If you run out of moves, you will fail the level. You can either replay the level or quit the level and clear your progress. Quitting the level will allow you to save your score to the leaderboard.

Levels & Scoring

The game has 80 levels, which are unlocked sequentially. You can replay any of the levels you’ve previously beaten. Replaying the levels can help you earn more points and improve your high score.

Before multipliers are applied, you earn a point for every piece you clear (or about 3 to 5 points per row cleared). Multipliers you earn increase your score substantially as you clear wrapped candies. Once you’ve unlocked a multiplier, it remains applied throughout the level.

Your score is cumulative across every level you’ve played. You can improve your level score and total score by beating you previous best on a level. You can also save your cumulative score either by quitting or finishing every level in the game. View the leaderboard by selecting High Scores on the welcome screen.

Power Ups

You earn power ups each time you clear more than 3 pieces in a row. Most of these take the appearance of a piece with frosting on it; these need to be activated by adding them in a row.

  • Horizontally frosted pieces will remove a horizontal row of pieces when activated. They form when you clear a row of 4 pieces horizontally.
  • Vertically frosted pieces will remove a vertical row of pieces when activated. They form when you clear a row of 4 pieces horizontally.
  • Dipped pieces remove 8 blocks within their perimeter. They form when you clear an L-shaped group of 5 blocks.

A fourth power up, the rainbow candy piece, can be activated without forming any row. It will clear any piece of the same type as the one it switched places with. It appears each time you remove 5 pieces in a horizontal or vertical row.

Most power ups will also be activated when the effects of another power up hit them, creating a chain reaction across the entire board. The one exception is the rainbow candy, which will disappear alongside every other piece when the other power ups are activated.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

One of your biggest challenges in the early game is clearing enough wrapped candies to sustain you until you can finish the level without them. Seek out the wrapped candies as soon as you can and immediately try to form rows with them. If you can’t reach them, dedicate your moves to reaching them.

Much of your score comes from multipliers and the cascading effect that happens when you clear several pieces at once. Your first goal would be to increase your multiplier by clearing rows with wrapped pieces, which does double duty by staving off a premature game over. Once your move count is now half the number you need to finish the level with, focus on triggering chain reactions by using power ups whenever you can. Try to include wrapped pieces to further increase your multipliers as you move close toward the end of the level.
