Chocolate Match Game Review

Chocolate Match Game Background

Chocolate Match is a match-3 game themed after chocolates. Select and swap pairs of chocolates and form full rows of 3 or more to clear them from the grid. Clear rows of chocolate under locked brown cells to free them up. Free up all the grayed out cells onscreen to finish each level.

This game was developed by Zygomatic. Another of our games, Candy House, operates on a similar set of rules.

How to Play Chocolate Match

To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen with your fingers. On the welcome screen, select the play button to begin.

Select a piece of chocolate, then select another adjacent one to have them swap places. If you form a valid row, they will remain in place. The valid row will be cleared shortly after.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Basic Rules

Clear rows of 3 or more pieces of chocolate to clear them from the grid. Clear the chocolates above the brown cells to free those up. Free the target number of brown cells shown before the timer expires to beat each level.

There are three different types of brown cells. Dark brown cells are cleared immediately after clearing a row that includes them. Light brown cells take two rows to clear. The first row transforms them into a dark brown cell. Bricked cells lock in the chocolate piece inside them and take two rows to clear out. Once cleared, they turn into light brown cells.

Some pieces of chocolate are frozen and cannot be removed. Like cells, they can be broken down by incorporating them into a row. Unlike cells, however, you do not need them to finish the level.

Levels & Scoring

The game has 50 levels, which are unlocked sequentially. Each time you reload the game, you have the option of starting from the first level or from the last level you’ve previously beaten. Your web browser automatically saves your level progress.

You earn 3 points for every piece of chocolate you clear, or about 9 to 15 points for every row you clear. You also earn 5 points for every second remaining on the timer. Your score is cumulative. You can save your final score on the leaderboard upon finishing the game or after a game over.

Power Ups

Power ups are generated each time you clear at least 4 pieces of chocolate in a row. These can help you clear multiple chocolate pieces and break down cells without needing to form valid rows. Unlike in other games, you can move them without them being part of a row. There are four kinds.

  • Single-row power ups come in horizontal and vertical versions, which indicate which direction they will clear. They are produced whenever you clear a row of 4. The direction they clear is determined at random.
  • Cross power ups clear both a horizontal and vertical row of pieces at the same time. They form whenever you clear a group of 5 in an L-shaped combination.
  • Rainbow chocolate pieces clear every piece of chocolate the color of the piece it swapped with. You make these by clearing 5 pieces in a row.

Power ups are crucial toward the later levels, where it becomes critical to take out the locked or frozen cells from a more manageable distance. Power ups will also activate when hit by the effects of another power up, allowing you to create chain reactions that clear more pieces in a single move.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

Like in Candy House, you can move your power ups freely. Use this to move them to a spot where you’ll need them more.

Grids become irregular as the game progresses, which can complicate your attempts to clear locked cells. Try to form power ups some distance away from hard-to-reach cells so you can take them out from a distance.

You earn more points by activating power ups in rapid succession. Try to activate every extant power up before you finish a level to get a chain reaction going. This will help you earn more points just as the level comes to a close.

Educational Aspects

The game helps develop a player’s spatial and strategic thinking skills.
