Zombie Attack Game Review

Zombie Attack Game Background

Zombie Attack is a retro-styled 2D zombie survival game. Hole yourself up in the base of your choice and shoot down wave upon wave of zombies for as long as you can. Survival is your only true victory.

How to Play Zombie Attack

On your keyboard, press the WASD or arrow keys to move. Move the mouse cursor to aim, then left click to shoot; your aim is shown by the crosshairs on the screen. Press the E key to release the dynamite.

On a touchscreen device, tap on the control circle and swipe to move. Tap on the red circle at the center of the control circle to shoot. Tap on the red circle 3 times to release dynamite.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Choose a map. Each of the three maps has their distinct advantages and disadvantages, which will affect your overall survival strategy. Some maps have more defensive structures than others, while others have zombies come from a single location that you can easily control.

Each session is divided into stages, and each stage consists of repeated waves of zombies. Zombie waves can have breaks between them, but they are normally continuous until the final wave. Once the final wave is announced, a large horde of zombies emerge from every direction.

The initial zombies are quite weak and are easily dispatched. As you progress through the levels, you face down stronger zombies. In general, the most recent type of zombie to show up is the strongest.

  • The default male zombie is the weakest. They give $20 when killed and do 5 damage to the walls.
  • The female zombie is stronger and faster. It is the fastest zombie in the game and cause 25 damage to walls. Killing them gives you $30 apiece.
  • The zombies with facemasks are the toughest in the game. They cause between 45 and 50 damage to walls and give $60 when killed.

The female zombies first appear in Level 2 and the masked zombies appear from Level 4 onward.

After each stage, you have the opportunity to buy upgrades to your walls, health, shields, dynamite, and guns. Most upgrades have 3 levels, which increase in cost as you proceed through the game. You only have 25 seconds between each stage to make your replacements and upgrades.

Walls cost 200 to build and rebuild and have a base strength of 150 hit points. They do not have a repair cost, as they are automatically repaired after each stage concludes. Upgrades affect every wall at once; each upgrade increases their strength by 225 ($500), 375 ($1,000), and $525 ($2,000) points. Try to avoid standing in the spaces where the walls once were when you replace them lest you get stuck.

Like the walls, your health is also restored after each stage. Upgrading your health costs $200, $500, and $1,000.

Your shield takes damage before your health does; each time you beat the level, your shield’s hit points are replenished. Upgrading your shield costs $100, $200, and $500.

You can carry up to 3 sticks of dynamite at any given time. Each stick of dynamite you lay down costs $100. Once it explodes, it does damage to any nearby zombies.

Your main weapon is the gun. At the start of the game, you begin with the machine gun. You can unlock the shotgun for $1,500 and the flamethrower for $2,500.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

It’s best to spend your earnings in the early game on your walls. The walls are your primary means of defense and will matter more than all other factors, including your health. Likewise, you should start upgrading your health when your walls are fully upgraded, as you’ll need to rely on health to survive once the walls are breached. The flamethrower is the most powerful weapon; it’s a better use of your money to upgrade to it directly than to start with the shotgun.

Our recommended upgrade order is to start with two wall upgrades, followed by the flamethrower. After that, upgrade the wall one last time, then focus on the remaining upgrades (shield, dynamite, and health).

If the walls start breaking down, flee to the next wall as soon as you can. When the walls fall fast, it’s best to anticipate that that the others will fall quickly as well. When fleeing the zombies, keep shooting at them to buy yourself time. If confronted with two directions with zombies, clear out the side with fewer zombies to give yourself an area to flee.

Once most of the zombies have been defeated, you can use the building as a block to catch the remaining zombies while giving yourself more space. Try to avoid wandering away from the building when hunting the remaining zombies as you can’t cross the barrier when you are in the time between stages where you can build defenses. Make sure you’re at the protected area before the level ends so you remain in the correct side of the barrier before the next stage begins.

Educational Aspects

The game’s combat aspect hones a player’s response times and aim. Players also learn the value of strategy and proper resource allocation.
