War of Light Game Background

War of Light is a pixelated defense game. Protect a planet from a fleet of marauding spaceships. Beat each armada of light-stealing enemy ships to win each level.

How to Play War of Light

To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen with your fingers.

You can choose between control settings by selecting their icons on the welcome screen: choose the hand on the left if you are playing on a touchscreen device or the hand on the right if you are playing on a touchscreen device or the mouse icon if you’re playing on a desktop. Once you’ve selected your controls, select the play button to open the level selection screen,.

On a desktop, use the keyboard to move. Press the A key to move counterclockwise and the D key to move clockwise. Press the W key to jump. To illuminate the planet, press the S key. Attack your foes by pressing the space bar. Select the attack upgrade buttons on the top left corner of the screen to bolster your attacks.

On a touchscreen device, tap on the buttons on the bottom row of the screen to control your defender. The counterclockwise, jump. and clockwise buttons appear on the bottom left corner. Above the counterclockwise button is the illuminate button, while above the clockwise button is the shoot button.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Basic Rules

Your character is the sole defender of a small, bright planet. You are tasked with taking out the invading enemy spaceships out to steal the light from the planet. Shoot the oncoming ships as they arrive while replenishing the planet’s light.

There are two types of enemy attacks, which affect how you must deal with them. Some enemies attack the planet itself. You don’t need any defensive measures and can attack them directly. Other enemies swarm and attack you. When this happens, run and evade them as much as you can, then take them out when you have an opening. You cannot shoot while running or illuminating the planet.

As you take out enemies, you earn light points. These serve as your health and can be used to light up the planet or buy upgrades.

Level Progress

Each level consists of a planet you must defend. You can only play on the illuminated (unlocked) planets. Levels are unlocked sequentially and are saved as long as you play continuously. To navigate, move your character from one planet to the next until you reach the last planet you’ve unlocked. Your progress resets each time you reload the game.

Levels last until a boss approaches. You must accumulate a considerable amount of health to survive and defeat the boss. Defeat the boss to clear the level.

You will fail the level if you run out of hit points or the planet goes completely dark. The game lets you replay the level multiple times.

Upgrades

The game has three types of upgrades, which improve the effectiveness of your attacks:

• Shot size increases the size and power of each shot you fire.
• Multishot increases the number of shots you fire simultaneously.
• Frequency increases your rate of continuous fire.

Upgrades have a ramping cost. The first level costs 100 light, the second 150, and the third 200. These only last through your current playthrough of a level. Your upgrades reset if you move to a different level or restart after dying.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

Upgrades use up the same points you use to survive attacks and illuminate the planet. Try to maintain a sufficient amount of light in your stockpile each time you buy an upgrade to ensure you don’t run out. We recommend keeping your light stockpile at least at 100.

Keep the planet lit. Charge up the planet a bit in between waves of enemies to replenish its light. We recommend using these respites well, as trying to charge it up during an attack will likely overwhelm you.
