Basic Gameplay Advice
Basic Rules
Your goal is to move through the level and collect as many coins as possible along the way. Reach the flagpole on the other side of the level and bring it down to clear each level. Avoid falling into pits or succumbing to enemies and hazards.
Level Features
Both coins and crowns can be found in star boxes strewn across the level. These are often embedded in brick platforms and can be used as permanent ones after you’ve retrieved their contents. To collect the contents of the star boxes, hit them from below by jumping underneath them. The brick blocks also yield points when you hit them; they usually (though not always) take only one hit to break.
Metal platforms move in a predetermined path. Hop on and off them at the right time to progress through the level. For metal platforms moving vertically, be sure to get off before it goes offscreen.
Pipes appear throughout the levels. You can use them as platforms or enter them to visit a secret chamber. Secret chambers contain many coins that you can pick up. Be warned, though. Some pipes contain carnivorous plants, which can cost you a life if they pop up.
Trampolines allow you to hop across large walls too tall for you to climb.
Enemies, Hazards, & Crowns
Enemies can be dealt with in two ways. By default, you can stomp them. Jump above them and land on top of them to successfully stomp. Collect a crown to activate the ability to shoot. Once you have the crown, you keep the ability to shoot as long as you stay in the main level. To shoot enemies, you must be a reasonable distance from them. Shooting armored enemies will also take out their shells.
There are several types of regular enemies in this game. Each one will instantly kill your character unless you hit them from above by stomping them. Blobs will instantly perish, while snails will leave behind a shell that will slide around and serve as a hazard both to your character and enemies. Flying snails are difficult to stomp and must be dealt with by shooting them. Likewise, carnivorous pipe plants can’t be stomped at all and should be either shot or dodged.
Besides enemies, you will also face dangers in the form of level hazards. These include static hazards like bottomless pits, lakes, and pools of lava and moving ones like spinning fireballs and lava blobs. You must time your moves carefully and quickly to get past moving hazards.
Boss enemies cannot be defeated by stomping. Some bosses, like the bomber cloud, can only be fled from, whereas others like the giant turtle can be defeated only if you shoot them. In a level where you can’t shoot the boss, try to get past it and reach the flag.
Levels & Lives
The game has 14 levels, which are unlocked in sequence. You can replay any of the levels you’ve previously beaten as long as you still have lives from your current session. Should you lose all your lives, the game resets your level progress.
You start each session with 3 lives, which appear on the top left corner of the screen. Each time you hit an enemy or hazard or fall into a pit or pool, you lose 1 life. Lose all your lives and it’s game over. You can replenish your lives by collecting red mushrooms, which occasionally appear when you hit a box.
Scoring
Scoring is cumulative across every level you play throughout the game. You earn points each time you do the following actions:
- Each enemy you kill is worth 100 points.
- Each coin you collect from a star box is worth 200 points.
- Each brick block you hit is worth 100 points.
- Completing a level is worth 2,500 points.
Items respawn after your character dies. Thus, each time you restart a level after dying, you can collect the same scoring items all over again. This may lead you to having a higher score than if you played through the game without dying even once.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
In underground levels, headroom is the key to defeating prowling enemies. Try to create a bit more space to jump by clearing brick blocks above you. This also has the added advantage of bolstering your score.
When shooting enemies, consider doing so from a reasonable distance. Getting too close to your foes will put them out of your minimum range, and getting them too far away will negate your shots’ effectiveness. Consider shooting flying enemies from a stationary vantage point to make it easy to time your shots.
