Rock Paper and Scissors Game Review
Rock Paper and Scissors Game Background
Rock Paper and Scissors is a variation of the classic childhood game where you play against a computer opponent. Play a simple score challenge game or up the ante by betting in-game money. Andercodes published this game on April 12, 2023.
How to Play Rock Paper and Scissors
To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen. Select a game mode on the welcome screen to begin. Select one of the 3 gestures (“rock,” “paper,” and “scissors”) to use it.
Basic Gameplay Advice
Basic Rules
The game’s three main modes follow the same rule set. The player must choose to deploy one of the 3 main gestures in traditional Rock, Paper, Scissors against the computer opponent. The hand gestures are as follows:
- Rock is a closed fist. It beats scissors but is beaten by paper.
- Paper is an open palm. It beats rock but is beaten by scissors.
- Scissors is a fist with two fingers extended to form a V shape. It beats paper but is beaten by rock.
You only find out what the computer chooses after you’ve made your choice. The outcome is determined by the abovementioned rules; the winner of the match receives the points or money. If you and the computer use the same gesture, the initial match ends in a draw and no points are earned. Keep playing until either you or the computer player wins.
Game Modes
The first two game modes are point games. Your goal in each one is to reach a predetermined number of points before the computer player does. The victor of each match earns 1 point. The winning point targets are 3 points and 5 points.
The third game mode involves betting. You and your opponent start with $5 in in-game money. Place wagers for the outcome of each match. The base wager is $1 and the max wager is the amount you have on hand. If you win, you keep the money; if you lose, you lose money. The wager can be any amount. Keep playing for as long as you can. The game only ends when you run out of money.
The Battle Simulator
The Battle Simulator is an autonomous battle that you set up and allow to run. You start off by choosing the number of rocks, paper sheets, and pairs of scissors to populate the game area. Once you choose a number for each type, you can start the simulation.
These pieces will move around until they hit one another. Each time a piece hits one they’re weak to, they transform into that piece. The count for each piece type is shown on the top row. They will continue to move until only one type of piece remains on the game area.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
There’s no one strategy that allows you to consistently win at this game. The best strategy from a statistical standpoint, therefore, is to pick at random every time.
This, of course, mainly applies to our game, as you’re playing against a computer. Playing against other humans is another matter. Scientists have found that players are more likely to repeat a winning gesture in the next match in what’s called a “win-stay, lose shift” strategy. This means playing the gesture that one is weak against is optimal. If you lose to scissors, for instance, play rock. If you won with scissors, switch over to paper.
Educational Aspects
The game is an introduction to the fundamentals of probability. The base game has a simple 1 in 3 chance of victory. It also introduces players to the concept of competitive balance, as none of the individual gestures is more powerful than all the others.
Player Age Recommendations
This game is suitable for school-aged players and above, though the simplistic nature of the game may bore older players. We recommend it for fans of classic schoolyard games. The game does involve simulated betting using in-game play money; otherwise, it has no adult content and isn’t meant to promote gambling.
