Pixel Lander Game Review

Pixel Lander Game Background

Pixel Lander is a minimalistic rocket flying game where players must safely navigate the rocket from the take off platform to the landing pad.

This game was published by Maximiliano Demonte’s QKY Games Studio.

How to Play Pixel Lander

Tap anywhere on the loading screen to bring up the welcome screen. Press the white play button in the lower center of the welcome screen to bring up the level select screen. Tap on a level number on the level select screen to begin playing it.

Accelerate in the direction you are facing by pressing the W key or the up arrow key.

Turn the rocket counterclockwise by pressing the A key or the left arrow key.

Turn the rocket clockwise by pressing the D key or the right arrow key.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Fly safely from the take off pad to the landing pad with the red finish flag on it.

Avoid running into spikes, spiked platforms, lava, or moving platforms with any part of your rocket. Doing so will result in immediate death. The bottom of the rocket and the tail fins can touch the ground or the walls without spikes so long as the contact is light. Be warned that whenever you bump into anything it causes the rocket to turn and can throw your aim off.

Most stages of the game have gravity, meaning a lot of your effort and time is spent adjusting acceleration to offset the force of gravity. On stages without gravity you can tap, wait a bit, then tap again after adjusting your aim. The lack of gravity means you are not constantly fighting the impacts of gravity while also adjusting your aim.

In most cases it is best to go slow through areas unless:

  • it is a straight vertical move and you are aligned perfectly
  • you are crossing an area with a moving platform that gives you limited time to pass through
  • you are just starting a long horizontal move and have plenty of time to slow down

When you need to change directions it makes sense to tilt the rocket’s angle a bit back in the opposite direction you are moving to slow down the horizontal momentum.

Some stages have keys on them which you must grab to unlock the path to the landing pad with the flag on it.

This game features 27 stages unlocked sequentially. The level select screen shows your best time for each level.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

It makes sense to go slow through areas with tight clearances. On some stages with large vertical climbs in narrow halls it can be beneficial to land on the ground in the middle at the bottom so that when you accelerate upward you are not near either wall.

You can be a bit more aggressive on zero gravity stages, as it is easier to recover from an out-of-control scenario and you are given more leeway with bumping into walls.

Some stages with moving platforms on them have the platforms out of sync so that you must plan to wait an extra cycle between passing the first and second moving platforms.

Educational Aspects

This game can help improve hand eye coordination, teach patience, and show how gravity works along with other forces like acceleration.

Player Age Recommendations

This game is fun for players of all ages, though the challenging course design makes it a better fit for players who are experienced gamers or players who are in high school and beyond. Younger children might find some of the tight course passages frustrating.
