Papa Louie 3 Game Review
Papa Louie 3: When Sundaes Attack Game Background
Papa Louie 3: When Sundaes Attack is a sweets-themed platform adventure game by Flipline Studios and the third platformer in the Papa Louie Arcade series. Radley Madish is back, and he’s once again taken Papa Louie alongside a group of food fanatics who were taking a culinary-themed cruise. It falls on the Captain, Cori and the people she rescues to save the day.
How to Play Papa Louie 3: When Sundaes Attack
To select, left click with your mouse. Select the large orange play button to load the game. Select Continue on the bottom right corner of the loading screen to bring up the welcome screen. On the welcome screen, select Play at the center to begin.
This game’s controls were optimized for desktops with keyboards. The characters share a few key controls in common. When moving on land, press the left and right arrow keys to move, press the up arrow key to jump, and press the down arrow key to crouch. Press the space bar to attack and press the down arrow key on a slope to slide. When swimming, press the left and right arrow keys to swim forward or backward, press the up arrow key to float, and press the down arrow key to swim down. When near a ladder, press the up and down arrow keys to climb.
Some characters have special abilities that let them explore more of the level. To complete certain objectives, you’ll need to play each level as the character with the appropriate special ability.
Basic Gameplay Advice
The game is a platform adventure game where your objective is to retrieve the people captured by Radley Madish and his forces.
At certain areas of a level are pulley-activated cages that hold one of the people held prisoner by Radley’s forces. To open the cage, jump onto the pulley’s handle and let gravity do the rest. Grabbing the cage handle will end the level regardless of whether there was a character still inside the cage. Like in Papa Louie 2 and unlike the first game, characters you saved do not reappear in the cages when you replay a level.
Summary
The cutscene outlines the plot:
A cruise held by Papa Louie in celebration of his new venture casts off on its maiden voyage, helmed by Captain Cori. During the event itself, Papa Louie’s grand presentation is ruined by the arrival of the last game’s villain, Radley Madish, and his new accomplice Luau LePunch. The guests are warped yet again to the land of Munchmore, trapping them in the sweeter side of the realm. Of the people taken by the villains, only Captain Cori is fortunate to avoid capture.
Navigation
After selecting Play on the welcome screen, select New Game on any of the empty save slots to get started. Your browser automatically saves your progress in each active save slot. The game provides 3 save slots; you can free up a slot by selecting the red X button on the top right corner of the save slot to clear it up. You can also select the Save a Backup button to download a copy of the save data to your device.
When you start a new session, type in your username on the space provided. Once you’re done, the game plays a cutscene showing the game’s plot. Select the skip button on the bottom right corner to skip past the cutscene. Unlike in the previous game, where you can choose between 2 characters, you always start each new session as Captain Cori.
Enemies and Combat
Enemies can be found patrolling through all parts of the level. Watch out for them as you move through each area. Some are aggressive and will attack or otherwise pursue you, while others will move back and forth in a set path. You can stop enemies in their tracks by stomping on them, which will stun them temporarily. Some enemies have heads that are spiked; attempting to stomp them or hit them with a ground pound will cause you to lose a life.
To take out enemies on land, use your attacks. Most player characters can take out enemies in at least one blow. You can also take out enemies marching down slopes by sliding down. Some enemies, such as sundaesauruses and cherry bombs, take multiple blows to defeat.
The game has a catalog of every enemy you encounter. Each time you meet a new foe, its entry appears in the Baddies Screen. You can access the Baddies Screen by selecting the Baddies button on the pause menu and map screen.
Scoring and Coins
The points you earn per level depend on your performance, which is measured in the following metrics:
- How fast you finish the level
- How many enemies you take out
- How many collectibles you pick up
- How many coins you collect.
Your score is cumulative across all levels; the score from every level you play is added to your total. Each time you replay and finish a level, its score is also added to your total.
The coins you collected throughout the level (including times when you replay the level from the beginning) are added to your total. These coins can be used to unlock new alt outfits for your characters.
Lives
You begin each level with 3 lives, represented by hearts on the bottom left side of the screen. Each time you touch or get attacked by an enemy, you lose a life. When you lose all your lives, your character faints and is removed from the level. Collect hearts strewn across the level or pass through a checkpoint for the first time to replenish your lives.
Check Points
Each area in a level has one check point, which saves your level progress whenever you pass by it for the first time. Check points resemble flowers crossed with blue ribbons. After quitting or dying, you can reload the level and resume from the last check point you passed through. A check point is saved until you pass another one or until you pull the handle of a cage at the end of the level. Check points are also cleared each time you quit or reload the game.
When you fail a level, select its icon on the map screen to start it again. You can choose to resume as the same character or as a different character. You can also quit a level and reload to your last check point.
The level progress includes not only your position in the level but also the coins and other collectibles you picked up the previous areas, which includes the sundaesauruses you need to take out. However, reloading a level also restores all the other enemies in each area.
Badges
Meeting certain milestones unlocks one of 48 badges. Among the events that grant you a badge include a specific number of characters freed, warp coins earned, or enemies defeated. You can view the badges in the game on the badge screen, which can be accessed from the map screen and the pause menu. The game alerts you to a badge you unlocked with a pop-up message on the top center of the game screen.
Characters and Abilities
After finishing the first level, you have the option of choosing characters. Each level you finish with a rescue adds another character to your roster. You can choose a new character to play as each time you start or continue a level. The game has a total of 28 characters; unlike its predecessor, you begin with only one playable character, Captain Cori.
Characters have different attacks, which fit into 5 basic categories.
- Swinging: Attacking a foe with a weapon at close range.
- Shooting: Attacking a foe with projectiles shot from a weapon
- Whipping: Attacking an enemy from a distance using a weapon
- Throwing: Tossing an incendiary weapon at an enemy
- Punching: Throwing hands at an enemy
Some distance attacks have better range than others. Some, like the pineapple gun, will have a hard time taking out enemies with a low profile.
To learn more about a character, select their portrait on the character selection screen. Each portrait contains facts about the character, such as their means of attack, any special abilities they may have, and when in the franchise they first appeared. You can also select the outfit tabs to unlock alt outfits for them to wear.
Special Abilities
Some characters have special abilities that allow them access to parts of the level that are ordinarily out of reach. You cannot collect all the warp coins in most levels until you’ve saved characters with the required abilities. A player character can have only one special ability.
- Swim boost: This gives you a brief burst in swimming speed, allowing you to To activate, press the space bar while moving horizontally.
- Wall climbing: This skill gives you the ability to treat walls as ladders. Press the left or right arrow keys to latch onto a wall, then use the up and down arrow keys to climb. You can press the arrow key opposite of the wall to detach
- Dashing: This lets you to bust through cracker blocks from a running start.
- Gliding: This lets you move around the level in mid-air. To glide, press the up arrow at the top of your jump.
- Ground pound: This lets you crush cracker blocks by jumping on top of them and take out enemies in a single stomp. To ground pound, press the down arrow key at the top of your jump.
- Double jump: This allows you to jump higher than normal. To double jump, press the up arrow key twice.
Levels
The game has 10 levels, which are unlocked sequentially. Like its predecessor, it consists of 8 standard levels, a 9th boss level, and the X Zone. The first 8 levels are sorted in pairs according to a theme based on ice cream flavors (blue moon, Neapolitan, mint, and chocolate cookie). You face down Radley Madish in the 9th Level while taking on Luau LePunch in the fourth.
To unlock a level, you must finish its predecessor levels while collecting the appropriate number of warp coins. There are 50 warp coins to collect, of which 25 are needed to finish the game. Fully completing all 50 warp coins will grant you access to the X Zone.
Warp coins are granted each time you fulfill the following criteria:
- Save a character
- Defeat a specified number of sundaesauruses
- Collect all the coins in the level
- Retrieve all of a specific objects
- Meet all of the NPCs
To unlock the later levels, you must often replay the previous ones using new characters. You automatically earn warp coins the moment you meet their criteria. You do not need to exit the level by winning to collect most of the warp coins.
Levels appear on the map screen, which becomes available after you finish the first level. Much of the screen is covered in fog at first, which is slowly lifted as you unlock and play more levels. Each level is divided into areas, which connect to one another through internal paths. Find the cages containing the characters, then jump onto the handle to pull the cage up. The exit animation plays and you win the level.
You can also quit the game without saving your progress past the last check point by selecting the pause button, then choosing Exit Level on the top right corner of the pause menu.
Land and Water
The game is distinct from its predecessors by having parts of the level be underwater. Players must swim in the water areas, which operate under different controls. Players automatically float up and must constantly dive down to move past the surface. Unlike on land, most player characters cannot attack while underwater and must swim away from enemies.
The underwater parts of the level also present unique challenges. Some areas have strong currents that flow in a specific direction. Players without the swim dash ability cannot move against these currents, while those with the ability are limited to swimming against horizontal currents.
Level Features
Ladders are a common way of ascending through platforms. While on a ladder, you cannot attack, so it pays to ensure that the ladder is free from any enemies that are moving up and down. Enemies can also camp in ledges next to ladders, making them near impossible to directly attack. Try to move past these foes quickly.
Inclines or slopes appear on both the ground and on elevated platforms. You can both walk and slide down slopes regardless of their steepness. When sliding down a slope, you will take out most enemies that happen to be traveling on it.
Balloons appear from the first level onward and act as platforms on the upper parts of the level. There are many different types of balloon in this game, some of which move in a predetermined pattern. Many balloons move horizontally, vertically, or in a circle. Some move only when you hop on them. Others that act as platforms move down when you step on them, prompting you to get off of them quickly.
Buttons open shut doors. To activate a door, press down on the button by stepping on it. In some cases, a cutscene plays showing you the exact door that was activated when you pressed the button.
The game has two types of trampoline, which lets your character jump much higher than they normally would when you hop on them. The first one you encounter is a magenta-backed creature from the second game. These creatures move back and forth horizontally, and you must jump on them at the right time to get to where you need to go. Awnings appear from Level 3 onward; unlike the creatures, they are stationary.
Cracker blocks serve as barriers to parts of the level. Only characters with the dashing and ground pound abilities can destroy these blocks.
Hazards
Underwater versions of the magenta bumper creatures appear stationary in the submerged portions of the level. While hitting them will not harm you, they will cause you to bounce uncontrollably in the opposite direction, placing you at risk of touching underwater enemies.
Inflating spiked berries can be found both above the ground and underwater. They expand and contract periodically, allowing you a brief moment to move past them. Hitting them when they’re inflated will cause you to take damage. They cannot be destroyed.
Bops are large rectangular opponents that act as barriers in the same way as the Swiss Jacks in Papa Louie 2. Groups of bops move either in unison or in alternating patterns, blocking your path and giving you only a brief window to cross. You lose a life if they hit or otherwise touch you. Unlike their cheesy counterparts, though, you can clear them away by attacking them. There are two types of bops: the brownie bops move up and down while the blondie bops move from side to side. You first encounter bops at Level 4.
Large Creameo cookies appear in Level 7. They are moving obstacles that will harm you if they hit you, but are brittle and can be taken out by hitting them. However, unlike real cookies, they are unharmed if they plunge into liquid and will become a nigh unstoppable hazard underwater.
Quicksand appears from Level 8 and the X Zone. Unlike in the previous game, these have a bottom. While enemies will drown in quicksand, player characters will eventually stop sinking. It is difficult to move through quicksand and you will often need to jump repeatedly to avoid getting stuck.
Freeze cannons appear in Levels 6 and 9 and in the X Zone. These shoot ice at you; if you get hit, you will remain frozen in place but are otherwise unharmed. To escape, you must jump 3 times. The cannons shoots in two horizontal directions and has a have a lavender-colored alert light that indicates which direction it’s currently aiming. It always aims toward you. They are frequently found near enemies, which makes getting frozen especially hazardous.
Bosses
Like in the previous game, Papa Louie 3 has two bosses. The final boss is Radley Madish, making his return to the series, while the middle boss is Luau LePunch.
LePunch
LePunch starts off by winding up punch attacks at you. His arms are extendable and have considerable reach; it’s best to keep your distance before you try to attack. Upon getting successfully damaged, he will run toward you while waving his arms. You will take damage if you try to hit him while he does this, so you should wait until he calms down before making a second attempt. After a few strikes, he switches to dropping from the sky; to avoid him, watch out for his shadow and run. He will also take more evasive actions as he loses lives.
Merely hitting him will not cause him damage. To harm him, first stun him by hopping on top of him, then hit him while he’s stunned. Repeat this process 5 times to take him out. Keep track of his lives on the bottom right of the screen.
Once LePunch is defeated, enter the door to the right and move to the cage at the end of the level to rescue Papa Louie.
Radley
You start Radley’s level underwater. You must flee Radley’s submarine while avoiding or taking out the various underwater enemies they encounter. While you flee, you must also dodge the missiles Radley will fire at you. Make it till the end of the path, then cross the check point. From there, enter the door to see the last two characters still imprisoned. This is a fake-out, as they will be hoisted upwards. Radley will appear, this time in a rocket, and will begin attacking you in earnest.
Radley starts off with homing chocolate missiles. He will also summon various enemies, starting from radish enemies and, much later, sundaesauruses. You must fend off both these enemies and the homing missiles for as long as you can. Later, his rocket also starts shooting a freeze ray.
Your attacks will not directly harm Radley while he is airborne. You get the opportunity to attack him when he brings out the yellow banana missile; hitting this missile will send it straight back to him, causing his rocket to crash and knocking him out cold. Once he’s knocked out; hit him. This will cause him damage but also wake him up if he still has lives. Hit him like this five times to defeat him. Only then can you save the two trapped characters.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
General Playing Advice
Explore the level as thoroughly as you can the first time around. This will help clue you in to the places you can go when you switch characters.
If you want to finish the game efficiently, try to collect as many warp coins as you can in a single run. Memorize the number of warp coins available and their requirements, then choose the available character that can get the most of them. Save even more time by focusing solely on the requirements your character can actually meet.
Each of the 28 available characters have unique attacks. Don’t be afraid to experiment by selecting a new character. Indeed, playing some characters in certain situations is crucial to getting specific badges.
Check Point Trick
Quitting a level will maintain the check points you made, though it won’t save the coins and other items you’ve collected past that point. You can use this to switch between characters midway between areas of a level, if you think another character is better suited for it.
This also works when you’re saving people that are within the same area of the level. The game will count a character as saved (and the warp coin earned) once you pull the handle. By canceling the exit animation by quitting, you can reload the level at your last check point, allowing you to resume the level without needing to go through the other preceding areas again. To unlock the next level, though, you must allow the ending animation to play at least once in your playthrough.
Educational Aspects
The game tests players’ response times and hand-eye coordination, especially in the swimming areas where dexterous use of controls is vital for survival. The game rewards observant players well.
Player Age Recommendations
This game is suited for older school-aged players and above. We recommend this game for fans of food-themed platform adventure games.
