Papa Louie 2 Game Review
Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack Game Background
Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack is the sequel to the original Papa Louie platform game and the second platformer in the Papa Louie Arcade series by Flipline Games. When Papa Louie and his customers are kidnapped by Radley Madish, it falls on Burgeria employees Marty and Rita to save the day… with some help from the customers they rescued.
How to Play Papa Louie 2: When Burgers Attack

Although this game might load on touchscreen devices, its controls were optimized for desktops with keyboards. All playable characters share core controls in common. Press the space bar to attack. When near a ladder, press the up arrow key to climb up and the down arrow key to climb down. To slide, press the down arrow key near an incline. You can alter the controls by selecting the controls button on the map screen or pause menu.
Some characters having special moves that allow them to access more of the level than their counterparts. You will frequently need to switch characters to achieve the completion milestones necessary to earn the warp coins and complete the game.
Basic Gameplay Advice
The game is a standard platform adventure game set in the food-themed realm of Munchmore. Your goal is to move through the level and reach the cages holding the customers held prisoner by the minions of Radley Madish.
To finish each level, you must jump at the handle controlling the pulley of each cage to free the person inside. Grabbing the pulley will allow you to exit the level regardless of whether you’ve actually rescued someone or not. Unlike in the first Papa Louie game, the characters you save do not reappear in the cages when you replay a level.
Summary
The cutscene outlines the following plot:
During free burger day at Papa’s Burgeria, Marty and Rita encounter a strange customer who ordered only 3 patties in his burger. He tips them with what turns out to be a warp coin and reveals himself to be the evil Radley Madish. He uses the warp to kidnap the customers; it falls on the Burgeria employees (whoever you happened to choose) to save all the trapped customers and defeat Radley and his forces.
Navigation
After selecting Play on the welcome screen, choose New Game on a save slot to begin a new session; select Continue on an occupied save slot to load a previous session. You can save up to 3 slots in this game, and your browser automatically saves your game progress in the currently active slot. From there, choose a primary character; you can choose from either Marty or Rita. Type in your username on the space provided, then select Continue to proceed to the game. If you want to switch characters, select Back. Select the x button on the save slot to clear it. You can also create a backup of your game progress you can store on your device by select Save a Backup on the save slot.
Each time you play a new slot for the first time, a cutscene plays. You can move past it by selecting Skip Intro on the bottom right corner. When playing for the first time, you automatically begin on the first level. Each subsequent level can be selected from the map once unlocked.
Choose a level to play from the map screen. After picking a level, select a character to play as on the character selection screen. This screen allows you to compare characters and keep track of your level progress. On the right side of the character selection screen is a top-down list of the warp coins you need to collect, their prerequisites, and the abilities the player characters must have to collect them. Once you’ve selected a character, choose Start Level at the bottom center of the character selection screen to begin.
Enemies and Combat
Enemies patrol the level. They are typically defeated by the player character’s chosen means of attack. Some are aggressive while others will stay still or walk in a predetermined path. Stomping on most enemies will stun them temporarily, giving you an opportunity for a finishing blow. You can also take out foes by sliding down an incline.
For most enemies, it usually only takes one attack to take them out, while others require more than one strike to defeat. Some player characters have much weaker attacks that require two strikes to defeat foes; the first stuns the enemy, while the second finishes them off.
Enemies with spikes on their heads cannot be stunned by stomping or taken out by a ground pound. You must use a regular attack to defeat them.
The many types of enemies you encounter are catalogued in the baddies screen, which you can access from the pause menu or the map screen by selecting the baddies button.
Scoring and Coins
You earn points based on your performance in the level. Factors include the number of enemies you’ve defeated, the number of coins you earn, and the speed you finish the level. Your score for every level you finish is added to your total score.
The coins you collected in each playthrough are added to your total. You can use these to unlock alternate outfits for each of the characters in the game.
Lives
You start each level with 3 lives, represented by hearts near the bottom center left of the game screen. Each time you touch an enemy, you lose a life. You can replenish your lives by collecting hearts strewn across the level. Lose all your lives and you fail the level; the player character faints on the ground and returns and is forcibly removed from the level.
Check Points
Levels have check points, which allow you to save your progress. These check points resemble blue flowers crossed with award ribbons. Each time you reload a level as the same character, you resume at the last check point. The check point is saved until you pass through another check point or pull the handle on a cage. Passing through a checkpoint also restores your lives. Only one level can have a check point at any given time.
When you fail a level after passing a check point, you can resume your level progress by selecting the level again. You can choose to play as the same character or choose a different one.
Reloading a level from a checkpoint restores the lives and enemies in that level but not the coins and other collectibles that you’ve already collected. This includes burgerzillas, should the level require you to take them out; you do not need to hunt for the ones you’ve taken out again when you reload a level.
Badges
The game awards you badges after meeting a specific milestone. These include unlocking a number of customers or defeating a number of enemies. There are 48 badges in this game, which you can view in the badge section. You can view this section by selecting the badges button on the pause menu and map screen. The game alerts you to the badges you unlock on the top center of the game screen.
Characters and Abilities
Starting from Level 2, you have the opportunity to select a character to play. You start off with two available player characters. You can also choose a different character by exiting the level. Each character you rescue grants you another playable character. Each of the characters attacks differently. Character attacks are divided into five different categories:
- Swinging: You attack an enemy at close range using a weapon.
- Punching: You attack an enemy from close range with a body part.
- Whipping: You attack with a weapon from a distance.
- Throwing: You toss an explosive weapon toward an enemy.
- Shooting: You shoot a projectile from a weapon at an enemy.
Each rescue unlocks a new character to play as. There are 28 characters in the game; only Marty and Rita are available at the beginning. Select a character’s portrait from the character selection screen to find out more about them. Every character portrait contains details on their attacks, the game they first appeared in the Papa Louie franchise, and three unlockable alternate outfits. You can equip any alt outfit you unlock by selecting its tab before you begin the level. Use the coins you collected to pay for the outfits.
Some characters have a special ability, which allows them to access parts of the level that others can’t reach. Each character with a special ability only has one of the following:
- Ground pound: This allows you to smash through cracker blocks, which can open shafts to other parts of the level. It can also be used to take out enemies instead of stunning them, though this will not work on certain enemies. To ground pound, press the up arrow key to jump, then press the down arrow key to hit.
- Gliding: This lets you move slowly through the air, allowing you to reach high-up platforms and collect items floating in mid-air. To glide, press the up arrow key after jumping and hold. Release to drop.
- Crawling: This lets you pass through tiny tunnels, allowing you to collect coins and enter hidden chambers. To crawl, approach a tunnel, then press the left and right arrow keys to move.
- Double jump: This lets you jump higher than normal. Press the up arrow key twice to double jump.
- Pushing rocks: Rocks block the way to key passages in certain levels, which will allow you to collect items within. To push, press the left and right arrow keys when beside a boulder.
- Wall jumping: This allows you to ascend shafts by hopping from one wall to the next. To wall jump, press either the left or right arrow key while pressing the up arrow key when next to a wall. Alternate between the left and right arrows while jumping to move up or down.
On top of that, individual shooting and throwing styles have different effects. Some attacks, like the roman candle, stun enemies before taking them out. Others, like the pepper grenade, explode and take out foes on contact.
Levels
The game has 10 levels, 8 of which are sorted according to a world theme. Each world theme has 2 levels. Most levels involve rescuing trapped player characters; the 9th level is a boss fight against Radley Madish. You can continue playing until you’ve collected all the warp coins.
Levels are unlocked sequentially. To unlock a level, you must finish the previous level and collect a specific number of warp coins from the preceding levels. Upon collecting all 50 warp coins, you unlock the 10th level, the X Zone. To collect a warp coin, you must accomplish the following:
- Save a character
- Defeat all the burgerzillas
- Collect all the coins in a level
- Retrieve all of a specific object (flowers, coins, colas, etc.)
Often, you must replay the earlier levels with new characters to meet the requirements to pick up warp coins to unlock a level. Once you’ve unlocked a warp coin, you get it automatically. You do not need to finish the level successfully to receive it.
The levels appear on the map screen, which becomes available after you finish the first level. The map starts off covered in fog; each new level unlocked removes another section of fog. Levels consist of areas that connect to one another through paths. Your job is to make it through each areas of a level until you find cages holding each of the imprisoned characters.
You can exit the level any time you want by selecting the pause button on the bottom left corner, then select the quit level button on the top right corner of the pause menu.
Level Features
Ladders are the main means of moving up a level. Once you start climbing a ladder, you cannot attack until you get off it. Watch out for enemies waiting in ledges next to ladders; if they’re too far away from the nearest platform, they’ll be impossible to attack. The best recourse is to wait for an opening and move quickly.
Inclines appear throughout levels. If you’re just above an incline, you can slide down them; any enemies on the incline while you slide will automatically be taken out. You can climb up any incline regardless of its steepness by walking.
Balloons are a common feature across all levels. They can either be stationary or moving, with some moving balloons remaining stationary until the player character steps on them. Traveling balloons move back and forth along a predetermined horizontal, vertical, or circular path above the ground and allow you to reach parts of the level that are normally too high up to climb. Some balloons that serve as bridges move down when you land on them; jump to the next one before it descends.
Buttons activate doors. To press them, you must stand on top of them. Once you press a button, the game usually plays a cutscene showing you the door that opens.
Cracker blocks stand in the way of several level pathways. Only characters who can ground pound can clear away cracker blocks. Not every instance of cracker blocks lead to a pathway; some blocks merely fill the space.
Tunnels appear in some areas of levels. These often contain coins and lead to otherwise inaccessible part of levels. You can only move through tunnels horizontally. Only characters who can crawl can move through a tunnel. Shafts are similar to tunnels; you cannot climb up them, but can fall down from them. Tunnels and shafts are frequently found together.
Magenta creatures with bouncy backs act as trampolines starting from Level 5. Use them to ascend to higher platforms in the absence of a ladder. Be careful, though; they move. If you fail to go up the first time, keep track of their movements as they walk around to
Boulders serve two purposes. For the most part, they are obstacles; they block buttons and paths. Only characters with the push ability can move them away. Starting from Level 6, you can use boulders as platforms to reach places that are too high up for you to jump by yourself.
Level Hazards
Bottomless chasms appear from Level 2 onward. Falling into a chasm is an instant level failure regardless of how many lives you’ve got left.
Falling platforms appear starting from Level 4. These consist of berries that grow from a vine. The first platform berries you encounter are purple ones, drop berries. You can only step on them for a short period before they fall off; move off them as quickly as you can before that happens. These grow back after a few seconds. Level 8 onwards feature blue and orange berries called on-and-off berries. These act as alternating platforms; as the blue fruits shrink, the orange fruits expand and vice versa. All the fruits of this type change size in unison, so time your moves carefully.
Appearing from level 6 onward, cheese cannons fire blocks of cheese at you. Once you’ve been hit, you lose no lives but are immobilized until you break free. Jump 3 times to free yourself, then move as quickly as you can to avoid getting caught again. Cheese cannons shoot in both directions at predictable intervals, so it’s important to time your moves carefully to avoid getting hit at all.
Swiss Jacks are un-killable enemies that act as hazards and obstacles. These are cheese blocks attached to the roof of a passageway that move up and down in regular intervals. Touching them will damage you the same way regular enemies do, as would them landing on you. To get past them, you must move quickly and at the right time, preferably when they had just moved up.
Quicksand appears from Level 7 onward. They resemble chasms in that they appear to separate platforms and you lose if you fall into them, but differ in that you can cross them by walking and jumping. The key to avoiding death in the quicksand is by constantly moving and jumping so you don’t sink in too deep. Watch out for hidden chambers beneath the quicksand. Usually, these appear just at the edge of your vision on one of the edges of the screen; in these areas, it’s safe to sink all the way down. Enemies that fall into quicksand perish immediately.
Boss Fights
There are two bosses in this game: Sarge (the villain from the first game) and Radley Madish. Sarge appears first and is the boss defeated in Level 4. Radley Madish has a level all for himself. Both bosses begin alone but summon extra enemies to their aid as the battle progresses.
Sarge
The boss fight against Sarge begins with you entering the second-to-the-last area of Level 4. The door shuts behind you, trapping you in with the boss. The boss will first try to throw pepper bombs at you (both small and large ones). After taking a hit, he will start rolling. The first time he rolls, he will only move horizontally; the next time he does, he will jump up and down while rolling.
Avoid the pepper grenades and jump over Sarge whenever he rolls toward you. Do not attempt to attack Sarge while he’s rolling. Instead, attack him while he’s attacking. Close the distance and hit him with an attack at close range. Don’t let him touch you. Defeat Sarge by hitting him 3 times.
Radley
The fight against Radley Madish consists of two stages. In the first, you must first stomp on him as you would smaller enemies to defeat him. Once he’s stunned, attack him. Once he’s attacked, he will appear to go down, but following a cutscene, spikes will emerge from the floor and you must race to the top of the first area by hopping from one platform to the next. Avoid all the enemies that appear along the way; do not waste too much time taking them out.
Once you’ve reached the corridor at the top of the first area of the level, move to the end of the path to enter the second area of the boss fight. Like in Level 4, the doors close behind you and you must take Radley out then and there. Unlike with Sarge, you cannot reach Radley by jumping or gliding as he rides a flying machine that moves just out of your reach.
He fires two weapons at you; two shots of barbecue sauce (brown) rockets and one mustard (yellow) rocket. The barbecue rockets are seekers; take them out before they hit you. Take out Radley by shooting his mustard. This will redirect the rocket toward him. Follow it up by attacking him directly. After getting hit, he will recover and fly much faster. Hit him several times to take him out. After Radley is defeated, the door to the right opens and you can now save Papa Louie himself.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
Exploration
Explore each level as thoroughly as you can on your first playthrough. This will help you out later when time comes to replay the level with a new character. If you remember where the tunnels are, for instance, you can bring your character there immediately. Be aware of features that appear at the edges of your vision; they may indicate currently inaccessible areas or secret rooms you can enter through an unexpected source.
General Advice
To progress through the game, you’ll need at least 24 of the 50 available warp coins. You can speed through the game by focusing on collecting as many warp coins as you can in a single run. Before you enter a game, pay attention to the prerequisites of the game to know what you can complete with the character you start with.
Each character offers several gameplay advantages over their companions. Often, you’ll need to switch to characters with special abilities to complete as much of the level as possible. To save time, quit the level past a certain checkpoint, then reload it while playing a new character.
Save time by focusing on the objectives your player character can actually meet. For instance, try not to be too focused on collecting coins if your character doesn’t have the ability to collect them all.
The game has 28 characters to try. Don’t be afraid to give each one a spin to see how their controls work in each level.
Checkpoint Trick
The game automatically saves your warp coins for saving people regardless of whether you allow yourself to finish the ending animation. To preserve your check points, quit the level upon rescuing the character before the level ending cutscene plays. This will allow you to reload the level at your last checkpoint while still saving the person you reached.
This method allows you to save time while completing the level. This is especially important if you have rescues or other goals that are not as far apart; you can reload the game to the last save point and not have to worry about fighting your way through the rest of the level all over again. You can also choose which check point to come back to by avoiding later check points if you deem it necessary. You will still need to play out the ending animation at least once to unlock the next level.
One drawback here is that it puts you at the risk of a game over since you can’t replenish your lives automatically. By quitting the game, you also don’t collect as many coins. This can slow you down if you’re planning to unlock all the characters’ alt outfits.
Boss Tricks
Two player characters are especially effective in dealing with the final boss, Radley. Both Boomer and Scooter can move up platforms quickly, avoiding the oncoming spikes and dodging the enemies more effectively.
In addition, the two players’ abilities allow the player to dispatch Radley quickly. Boomer’s attacks count as stuns, which allow her to attack Radley multiple times in rapid succession. Likewise, if Scooter slides at Radley, he can be repeatedly knocked out and hit, ending the battle quickly. Accomplish this by jumping, then pressing the down arrow key and the left or right arrow keys.
Educational Aspects
This game challenges a player’s response times and hand-eye coordination. It also encourages and rewards players’ curiosity, problem solving, and observation skills, as several objectives can only be accomplished if the player notices a specific detail in the level’s layout
