How to Play Merge the Gems

Select by left clicking with your mouse or by tapping on the touchscreen with your fingers. The game is automatically playable once it loads on your browser for the first time. Subsequently, you must select the play button on the lower center right side of the welcome screen. Select any of the numbers at the bottom center of the welcome screen to choose your starting highest value.

Select a number stone, then drag and drop it on an identical number stone to merge them together.

Basic Gameplay Advice

Your task is to merge pairs of number stones on the grid to create stones that are one value higher than their predecessors. Drag and drop the stones horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. You can also drop the stones and let gravity do the rest. Whenever a pair of merged stones match with the one below them, they too will merge together. Each time you form a cavity after merging or moving stones, any stone above them will fall down.

Most stones can only be moved when no stone obstructs them from the top. You can also move stones embedded within the stack if they are next to an identical stone. Later in the game, pairs of stones that are bolted together appear. You cannot move the bolted stones separately and cannot merge them together if they are identical. To separate them, you must merge on of the numbers with another identical one.

As you play, more number stones appear from the bottom of the grid. The time between the appearance of these new stones is measured by the timer bar on the top center of the game screen. If any of the gems reaches the top of the grid, it’s game over.

You earn points each time you merge a pair of stones. The value of the pair you merge is based on the number on them. For instance, a pair of 1s will yield 1 point, and so on. You also receive a combo multiplier bonus each time you clear more than one pair of stones at a time. Your web browser automatically saves your best score. Your best score appears on the top center and updates in real time.

Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy

Consider keeping one of the grid’s columns open to make moving other pieces in place much easier. An empty column can be used to temporarily hold stones you plan to move elsewhere, keeping the other columns free for merging.

Break bolted stones apart as soon as you can. Bolted stones decrease your mobility considerably and reduce your merging options.
