Basic Gameplay Advice
Mahjong Solitaire Basics
The goal of Mahjong Solitaire is to clear out the entire stack of tiles by removing pairs of identical free tiles. The only exception to this rule are the flower and season tiles, which can be matched with any of the others of their category.
A tile is free if it has no tile above it and has at least one horizontal side clear. The game allows you to gray out the non-free tiles, making them easier to spot. The counter on the top right shows how many free pairs of tiles you have available at any given time. When you run out of free tiles, the game will automatically shuffle the tiles.
The game has no time limit. Use the timer to track your performance.]
Hints
You start each match with 3 hints. Each hint will show you any random pair of free tiles somewhere in the stack. Hints lack any sort of penalty, but they cannot be replenished.
Selecting a Stack
The game unlocks a puzzle for every day of the year. You can choose the stack of the day by selecting the calendar, then selecting the present date. Upon loading the game, the calendar is the option opened by default. The game has a total of 366 stacks spread out in the following categories.
- Animals
- Buildings
- Classic
- Forms
- Letters
- Plants
- Pyramids
- Things
- Zodiac
You can also play any of the previously unlocked days’ stacks.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
Gray out the non-free tiles at the start of the game to make it easier to differentiate them from the tiles you can pair. Afterward, your main goal throughout the game is to make sure your open match count stays up. Select pairs from the outside in to open up more tiles.
Select the hints if you find yourself spending too much time searching for pairs. When you’re low on pairs, it’s much easier to induce a shuffle by clearing off the remaining ones as soon as you can.
If you make a mistake, select the undo button on the bottom right corner of the screen.
Educational Aspects
This game hones a player’s searching and logical thinking skills.
