How to Play Donut Lover
To select, left click with your mouse or tap on the touchscreen with your fingers. On the welcome screen, select the play button below the title at the center to load the level selection screen. Choose an unlocked level to begin.
On a desktop, use the keyboard to control the monster. Press the left and right arrow keys to move horizontally. Press either the space bar or the up arrow key to jump; press twice to double jump. You can either press twice in a row or press once and press again.
On a touchscreen device, tap on the arrow buttons to move as you would with the keyboard keys. The up arrow button is on the bottom left corner while the left and right arrow buttons are on the bottom right.
Basic Gameplay Advice
The game is a basic platform game. Guide the hungry monster through each level until you reach the very end. Avoid various obstacles and enemies strewn along the way. Finish each level by collecting the donut at the end. Once the monster gets the donut, they say something about it before the level concludes.
Each level has several features, which are as follows:
- The most common platforms, which can either be permanent or temporary. Temporary platforms disappear not long after you step on them. Be sure to cross them before they disappear.
- Some platforms move, serving as a means to cross wide chasms. Time your jumps to make it to the other side.
- Buttons open doors. Some buttons need to be constantly pressed and require an object on top of them. Others can be pressed once.
- Cupcakes are heavy items that can be pushed around. They can be used to push buttons and serve as impromptu platforms as needed.
Levels contain a number of hazards:
- The earliest type of hazard you encounter are enemy monsters, which resembles a brown spiked bonbon. These move around in a set pattern. You cannot attack enemies; evade them by jumping over them at the right time.
- Spikes appear in pits, though they can be connected to moving platforms.
- Spinning blades can be attached to platforms or move around in circles in mid-air. Occasionally, they may disappear and reappear in intervals.
- Shooters release fireballs in predictable intervals. The rate and pattern of fire can vary per shooter.
- The boss, Frivgobula, is an enemy unique to Level 10. Unlike the other foes, they can be defeated by activating a shooter above them at the right time. A health bar at the top center of the screen indicates how much health he has left.
The game does not give you any lives. If you hit any hazard, you will instantly die. The game automatically restart the levels each time you perish.
The game’s 10 levels are unlocked sequentially. You can replay any of the levels you’ve already beaten. Your web browser automatically saves your game progress. The final level is a boss fight, different from the others.
Advanced Playing Tips & Strategy
As you progress through the game, you must handle your jumps with more precision. Remember that you can alter your direction in mid-air, which can be vital if you need to land somewhere else. Likewise, you can maximize the height of your double jump by waiting a while before jumping.
Although some of the hazards may be invisible, they are still active. Pay attention to their expected pattern of movement and move only when you’re sure they’re not there.
Not every hallway will allow you to jump well. Test your ability to jump while your enemies are away to see how well you can evade your foes.
You slow down whenever you push the cupcakes. If you must travel a long distance to push the cupcake in place, consider doing it in short steps. This is especially important in later levels where cupcakes will be located where the hazards are.
Level-Specific Advice
Level 8 has an enemy that shoots fireballs. The amount that the angle the shooter fires at varies with each playthrough. Sometimes, it can be ridiculously easy, while other times it can be downright impossible. Be prepared to replay this level a couple of times.
Level 9 involves a lot of backtracking. First, you must select one switch midway through the level, then activate another near the beginning to open the door that will lead you to the end of the level.
Level 10, where you fight the boss, plays a bit with the switches. Instead of opening doors, you use them to activate the shooter. There are two buttons, one on either end of the boss arena. Get to one of the buttons before the boss does and press it as the boss goes under the shooter. Repeat the process until the boss is defeated.
